As RR held off a late charge from MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja to defeat CSK in an exciting match, Jos Buttler (52 off 36) and the spinners shone. As RR scored a strong 175/8, Buttler was ably helped by Devdutt Padikkal (38 off 26), R Ashwin (30 off 22), and Shimron Hetmyer (30 off 18). Chennai Super Kings, who were attempting to defend 176, were pushed back early by RR’s methodical bowling. Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was in fine form, was lost early on when he top-edged one off Sandeep Sharma, and Yashasvi Jaiswal made a fine catch. In the first three overs, RR only surrendered one four. The fourth over of the innings saw the start of Rahane and Devon Conway, who both scored fours off Jason Holder. Sandeep Sharma was unable to hang on to a challenging opportunity at backward square leg off a terrific sweep ball that broke through his hands and sped away to the fence, so Conway was a little unlucky with the second four he hit off Zampa.

As RR reached 45/1 at the conclusion of the Powerplay, Rahane struck the first six runs of the innings by lofting one off R Ashwin over wide long off.
